Cow Hoof Marshmallows?

My new comp is here and I really like him. His name Is Elder De Vivanco
from Peru and he's pretty chill. He actually obeys the rules too.
But we have had a difficult week cause we have like four investigators and
none of them have very much time so we've been trying to find new ones. We've
gotten some pretty promising contacts though but we haven't been able to get
a hold of them yet.
Our reactions vary when people find out we are Mormon. "oh I'm a christian"
or "oh I'm a catholic"
So we usually say that we are Christians too and then tell them that the "He is the Gift" video is for all Christians and not for church members only. So
our week consisted of teaching like 3 legit lessons that were all really
good and contacting new people. But elder Devivanco and I have been getting along great and we have been having fun.
We had a Zone conference on Saturday and an English Hymn competition! And
we (Elder Johnson and I) Totally bombed our verse and it was probably the
funniest thing ever hahaha. I was laughing really hard on stage and Elder J
was totally embarrassed. So yeah that's pretty awesome.
The new star wars speeders are awful... Buyt the Stormtroopers are SUPER
sweet looking haha (In reference to the pictures we sent of these things for the new Star Wars movie.)
I wrote some of the info form this week to dad but I'll just write some
personal stuff to you! things have been weird without a mom helping me out.
It was pretty hard to adjust to that but now I'm doing just great. I have
this little mom in my head that screams, "Justin, Justin, JUSTIN!!!!!!"
every time I almost get attacked by a dog, hit by a car or even ride in a
taxi. ;)
I'm starting to learn how to cook and stuff like that. We make lunch for
ourselves every sunday and so i've been getting good at it. Wahoo!!!
What's the full name of our current stake pres? I need to write him a
letter.
I also am not fond of the cow hoof flavored marshmallows. Ugh..... Those are
horrid.

First Baptism!

Hey howdy hey family!!!
This week was not the best but not too bad. Since we had to drop a lot of
investigators and we didn´t have any to fall back onto, our numbers were
really really bad this week. But we had a great lesson with Jose and
he is really digging learning about the church. Whether or not he is
interested in joining I can´t tell, but he came to a baptism for the zone
leaders and he seemed really intrigued by the way we do baptisms. He´s come
to church twice, but for some reason he has ended up in the branch that
meets after us both times. haha. So we´re happy about him. But we had a very
difficult week trying to find people to teach.
BUT I BAPTIZED SOMEONE!!!!!

It was another investigator of the zone leaders and she asked me to baptize
her!! That was really cool. I didn´t mess up on the prayer or her name and
she was really happy for the rest of the day. The only catch was that it
was supposed to be last weekend but she had to work. Then is was supposed
to be this last Saturday night, but she had to work... Soooo we did this
baptism at 7:30 in the morning on Sunday! hahaha. We were all tired but that
wasn´t important (especially when we got in the water. FREEZING!). The
spirit was so strong and I can´t even begin to describe what it feels like
to help someone enter the truth like that.
We found out Saturday night that my companion is getting transferred to be a zone leader with Elder Gomez (the son of the missionary mom that found my blog and is from Oklahoma). He leaves tomorrow and I get my new companion sometime this week. So I´m excited and very nervous for that because I´ll be the leader of this area now. Yikes.....
But I´m having fun and I´m excited for the change.
No one was really interested in "He his the Gift" (I wonder how he is showing the people this. I keep forgetting to ask. Oh... Wait. I bet they are just passing out the cards NOT showing movie...) this week so we have no new investigators which we desperately need so that was hard to deal with. Click HERE to see the short movie clip.
People really like Christmas though. They don´t celebrate quite the same
but it´s really nice to see some trees in the houses.
I love you guys!!
Keep it real!
Be ready on the 25th!!!!
Love YOU :)

Elder Skinner

Some Random Questions Answered.

To answer some of your questions, we get around by walking or taxis. And
the taxis are probably have some of the meanest drivers in the world. (some
of them are super nice though). They are super junky cars too. None of
them have seatbelts so every ride is just holding your breathe for fifteen
minutes hahah. We usually just have cereal for breakfast and we almost
never eat dinner. Maybe like a snack because all of our investigators are
always giving us bread and juice and what not. The juice... SO GOOD (unless
it´s papaya. That stuff is jank). For street contacting we just walk up to
people and ask them about Christmas and then share He is the gift. I'm wondering how they share this? Is it just the pass along cards, because I don't think they have a way of showing them the video...
But for other months, we just ask them if they have a family and if they want to be
with their families forever (the answer is almost always yes).
We go to the chapel in Recuerdo and you could probably find it on google earth! I couldn't find it... The building has a kind of junky piano but nobody can read music so it´s never used during church. The son at our lunch house IS a member, but in the process of becoming a better member so he´s slowly getting better. (I think).

The branch pres is super nice and cool and he´s a doctor. Our branch is about to do a temple trip to Bogota so they´re all pretty excited about that.

They do have peanut butter but they come in jars the size of those little
relish jars and they cost around six bucks. But I still have mine. I´m
waiting until Christmas. Can you send a recipe for french toast? We want to
make some PB&J´s and french toast for Christmas.

I actually met Elder Gomez His mom found this blog and commented on a post. They lived in Oklahoma at one time. Small world. and he already knew who I was. He´s super cool
form what I´ve met and he likes Oklahoma a lot haha.
The mission is fun and I´ve been growing a lot! Both in sprirt and in belly
size because the rice we eat gives you a rice belly. (a beer belly but with
rice). I´ve probably lost weight but rice does that anyways :P
I love you guys! I´m working on writing better letters so let me know if
I´m getting any better or if you want anything specific!!
Love,
Elder J-Skinny
No pictures. And the recording we got was meant for Tressa so we didn't listen to it and forwarded it to her. She got the one meant for Connor. So if anyone got one meant for his family...PLEASE send it to me! ivyskinner@gmail.com
HAHA!

He sounds happy. When I read his letters I can hear his voice. Can't wait to see and here him via Skype on Christmas! :)

"He is the Gift" - the video is a gift to see!

Things here have been up and down, back and forth, and all around! We had to drop a couple of investigators that just won't progress and are showing no signs of progressing any time soon. So that was kind of hard to deal with. But to counter that we got some new investigators and some our inactive members are coming to church!

"He is the Gift" is such a blessing to all of us who see it a LOT. We are getting lots of interest from investigators who didn't really care about us before. And we are getting lots of really good feed back.

We got a new family of investigators. The dad has spina bifida that makes it so he can't do anything with his legs other than stand enough to use his walker. He and his wife (girlfriend) have three sons and I think the youngest has the same thing. It's really sad but humbling to see them. Well, they live really close to us and we always see them so we went and talked him a few days ago and he agreed to have us come over to his house to hear the first lesson. Well the first lesson went well and they liked what they heard! They agreed to have us come back and now every time we see them outside their house they are all happy and excited to see us!!WOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!! Pretty stellar right?! So they are looking good right now and I really like to go visit them. They have a wonderful spirit about them. :)
In other news, my Spanish is getting better and now I don't have to think quite as much about what I want to say before I can say it. I still have a ridiculously hard time understanding anything but it's getting better slowly. I've been a lot better about studying the language. HOORAY FOR THE GIFT OF TONGUES!!!!!
Things are going great! It rains every single day here now (which rules cause I lent my umbrella to our investigator at church a few weeks ago cause she didn't have one and then she moved out of our area...). But sometimes the umbrellas won't even help because it rains side ways. haha. ;)
But I've been using my water proof jacket and my shoes keep the water out. Maybe if they last for my whole mission Ian can use the other pair I have. haha. I'm pretty sure we bought the mission shoes from missionary mall. Supposedly they are working good so far. :) 3 months though isn't too long is it?
Love you guys and I hope Everything is going well with school.
Love,
Elder Skinner

Video, Audio, and a letter!

A Real Passion for Passion Fruit -Watch VIDEO:

You can LISTENto him by clicking HERE.
Skinner family!! Sorry i didn't write yesterday. The whole entire mission was called to come to Cali to learn about a new Christmas promotion the church is doing which includes renting the home page of Youtube and the giant tv's in times square! It's called, "He is the Gift." check out the video at christmas.mormon.org and buy the Ensign for November and December! It's super cool!
Due to transfers this last week, we had a not-so-great teaching week. Our numbers were very low but now we have new missionaries to help us out. We got around four new investigators though and holy cow, they are ready for the gospel. (He's lucky to be in a mission where four new investigators equals low numbers for the week! haha) They love the plan of salvation and are enthralled by the Restoration.
The new zone leader and my new roommate is a gringo from Preston, Idaho and he has been so nice to have around. Living with three young adult latinos who are freaking crazy was getting a little tough to deal with. His name is Elder Johnson and he was totally in the widesreen version (and only the widescreen) of Napoleon Dynamite hahaha. So we have stuff to talk about.
Due to no one coming to church, we had to drop our baptism dates again :( But we're working on new ones. We had one inactive member, Jeison, who hasn't been to church in forever come out with to our lessons this last week and that did wonders for him because he rediscovered his testimony when we asked him to share it. My comp talks a little (way) too much during
lessons so it was hard to for Jeison or I to get anything in but when we did, it was amazing. And he TOTALLY CAME TO CHURCH!!! So we had some success with him and that was really cool.
My testimony has grown as I've learned to swallow my fear, trust in the Lord, and just TALK. It is so hard to get over my fear of my Spanish but when I do, the Spirit guides me and I almost always know what to say.
The whether is very cool but it rains about 5 times a day. And 3 of those times it does us more good to hold our umbrellas side ways because of the wind.
I Love you guys and I pray for you too!
Love,
Elder Jenky Baby. PLEASE leave us a comment if you happen upon this blog and you have an elder out in this mission. We'd love to connect!
More Birds in the apparment! Socks on his hands???

Prayers Answered-Good Week

Hugh is adorable!!!! I sent him pictures of his new cousin, Hugh, born November 12th. He's right. He is adorable.
See? told you so....
This week was incredibly better. All prayers said on our behalf were answered and we had some amazing lessons! All, but one, investigators are
progressing (all expect for coming to stinking church!). We had some really
spiritual moments with some families and they are loving the gospel and
building their own testimonies!! I was able to bear testimony about prayer
and that was absolutely incredible. The spirit was helping me because I
said things that I was not able to say before and can't repeat right now!
SO your prayers were answered! Hee hee. I love to hear this. Just sayin'.

My Comp is staying here so transfers are only happening for others. I'll be
with him until next transfer! Which I'm glad about 'cause we just barely
found our teaching pattern together and things are looking bright. I still
want to smash his Rubik's Cube but I'm sure he wants to shoot me when I talk
music so I never say much about it hahaha.
I tried cow tongue yesterday which was honestly pretty nasty... But I know
that I'd be able to eat it if I had to at a members house haha. The mission
rules on lunch with members changed and now we have one family that feeds
us every day... The mission gives the family money and a menu and they cook
for us. Which in this culture, is not weird. But to me, it is very weird.
Hermana Marojena is our cook and I don't always like going over there
because she has a 22 year old son who lives there and is kind of a jerk to
her and everyone else. For some reason all of the Latino missionaries think
he's the bee's knees but he's always playing terrible rap music and trying
to show us his favorite lingerie models.. (rrrrr...Mom doesn't like this...)
SO yeah, other than him, all is well! We are fed very well. (Oh, by the
way, this is the member's house in which I vomited in the sink. Not
awkward at all.)
The letter that I was going to send you guys was going to cost $41 to send so I had ELder Martinez take it to send it form mexico. So it may never actually get there haha. But just know that it exists ;)
Love you mom!!!
Love,
Justin!!! Elder Skinner

Audio File if you want to Hear Elder Skinner!

You can LISTEN to Elder Skinner TELL his stories if you click HERE!
Don't be fooled. He may have hated the Chicken Heart/Liver Soup, but he LOVED having to eat it so he could experience and therefore tell us all about it. :) That's one thing about his mission that I know he looked forward to!

Well to start this email off, I'll just say that for every good week,
there's a bad one haha... Cause this week was one of the hardest yet..
We had some lessons fall through and due to some bad planning none of our
weekly goals were met :(
It's been really hard to keep patience with the other missionaries too.
Living with three other guys my age who are crazy Latinos is pretty
difficult sometimes. I'm glad he's experiencing new cultures! Elder--- from Mexico who shares our apartment with us is on his last week so he's been really homesick and having a hard time with that. But He'll be there soon :)
Some good things that happened! We have new baptism dates for the ----
family and they are excited and really seem like they want to join the
church. So I'm stoked about that! We're starting to teach one of the
daughter's friends too so it's slowly growing. We helped out with two
baptisms on saturday and that was really cool. Neither of them were for us
and our area but they were for some investigators we've made friends with
at church. Super spiritual. The people who were baptized shared their
testimonies after and that helped me out a lot. Because I suck at Spanish,
I'm limited to sharing a very short and brief testimony. But hearing their
testimonies, which were also very short and very simple helped me to
realize that Everyone's testimony has to grow. My Spanish testimony will
grow with just a little time and patience. :)
In other news, I ate some chicken throat, heart and liver soup yesterday...
SO NASTY... I'm so glad no one saw it happen but when I was eating the
liver, I straight up dry heaved probably the hardest I ever have. hahaha. My
neck is sore from it! If it weren't for juice, I wouldn't not have been
able to eat it. So there's my fun eating story for the week ;)
I hope things are going well! I love you guys!
Love,
Elder Skinner!

Street Contacting, Laundry, The Birds and a Spanish-Speaking Parrot

Mountain Hike
Things sound like they're going super awesome! I'm glad. Your costumes looked super rad! This week was better! I have been relying Christ a lot more.
We went on exchanges again on Thursday and that was fun! I was with Elder Chanca, one of the zone leaders and when we were making goals, I said we should get 10 street contacts. Normally, it's a good day if you get 3, but it's mostly because no one ever tries to do it. So we set that goal and MADE IT!!! My companion found out that and the next day we got 11, and now the whole zone is flipping out over street contacting! Yesterday, we went to an area that had very few investigators and all of the missionaries split up and just talked to people on the streets for and hour and a half. We ended up with around 40 or 50 total!! So now we just need to use them ;)
We had two birds get into our kitchen on thursday and I about peed my pants when I went to put away some bread and they flipped out. So we practically tore apart our kitchen trying to catch them and get them out of the house hahaha. It was super funny expect for the part where they pooped everywhere... Didn't get on any of the food though so that's what counts ;)
I'm starting to notice what every one says about South American missions is true. The people will commit to just about anything, like baptism, prayer, reading the BOM, and coming to church. But they don't ever follow through. We had 15 investigators say they were coming to church but only 5 showed up (and they were a family). Because of that, we had to cancel a baptism date for a family because you need to attend church 3 times before baptism :(
But i'm not complaining! I'm super happy the ones that came did! I can tell they had a good experience and seeing them progress makes me want "SHOUT! throw my hands up! SHOUT!" Seeing results when investigators act on the gospel is really what makes the work so wonderful and your testimony stronger. There is a talk I read in the Liahona called, "Becoming Perfect in Christ" and I think all of you should read it. It's helped me want to try
harder to be better and throw away my unrealistic expectations for myself
and others. It´s a great article!
We have an American investigator!!!! His wife is Colombian and they moved here 1990. He suffers from a spine disease I forget the name of and he is restricted to his bed. So during exchanges I went there and taught the first lesson in English which was actually harder than I thought.. But hey, it went well and they really like us!
I´m havinga great time and I´m glad to hear you guys are too! Love you all!
Love Elder Skinner
One of the birds we caught in our kitchen.
Me doing my first load of laundry on a handwashing thing. Which was kind of fun (in the way that doing the dishes for the first time as a kid is fun, before you realize that it´s a lame chore haha.)
We hung out with a member family today and went to a restaurant where they caught and killed your fish as you ordered it, which I personally found horrific. So I ordered chicken. And then we hiked around the mountain that we were on for an hour.
We saw this parrot who actually copied what you said!! Unless it was in English... so if you were ever wondering if birds could understand different languages, I guess they can!

The Good, Bad and the Vomit

Me and Elder Tomo from Mozambique!
GRAM AND GRANDAD! that sounds fun! My parents are coming to visit us in Oklahoma! We are super excited...
I´m happy to hear about that!
And it really does help to hear that you guys want me here. The past two weeks have been really rough. Often times I want to come home cause I feel like I´m not progressing. But really, I am! It just feels like I´m not because time moves in slow motion here. It feels like I've been here for a very long time. But I´m doing better now.

The members feed us like crazy down here. Too much if I´m honest. Lunch here is the big meal and dinner is just as small if not smaller than breakfast. So that´s a weird transition. (excerpt from Ian's letter that Justin's Pleasant Hills YM group will find familiar- weak stomachs need not read:
So funny story. read this to mom and dad. We were eating lunch at a member's
house and I had just finished eating a ton of fried chicken and potatoes
and pineapple juice when the 19 year old son brings me this giant bowl of
chicken soup. So to be polite, I start eating it. Well, I start to feel
sicker and sicker until I finish the bowl and I feel like I´m dying. So I
go into the bathroom to splash some cold water on my face and with like a
.5 second warning, I barf ALL of the soup into the sink. The entire bowl.
In the sink. Which then decides to clog. So I´m standing horrified in the
bathroom of a member's house with a sink full of vomit. So I had to explain
to my comp what happened and then I cleaned it up hahaha.)
We have two more baptism dates!! For some parents of a recent convert. And I´m stoked!

We went on exchanges on Thursday which was very cool. We taught some cool lessons.

We live in a pretty decently sized apartment with the zone leaders. That´s fun!
My shoes are absolutely wonderful. No blisters and my feet are normally never sore. It rains cats and dogs here and it helps that they´re water proof. Sleeping is a nightmare (or not, because you can´t have nightmares when you wake up five times a night). But it´s slowly getting better. Melatonin helps but I have horrible dreams every time I use it. So I don´t usually take it.

The bugs don´t bother me anymore! It´s magical!! (Or maybe all our prayers for him...)

I´ve been trying to work hard and Spanish is coming along!!

Also, I´m teaching an English class every Tuesday now so that´s really cool! Elder Garcia pretty much started that. The problem is that the only English a lot of these people know are the names of bands or swear words. So they´ll write that on the board and I´ll have to explain that it´s bad and they shouldn´t say it haha.

I love you!!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!
Love,
Elder Skinner
In the MTC with his new favorite fruit- Passion Fruit which he says looks like Alien embryos or brains or something. They do! Ew! (But I know the taste yummy.)

The cool statues are at the bottom of the mountain we toured in Bogota
and the one of me is at the top of the mountains.
And the tiger blanket is my room here.
My friend Elder Dalton in the same mission. This is a kid who was in Justin's seminary class in Layton last year who go the exact same call-word for word -except their names.
(I think that 's who this is....)
I don´t have any new pics cause I´m not really allowed to carry around my camera. It´s dangerous to pull it out here 'cause someone could steal it. :(

Popayán, Colombia - Week 2

I'm not sure they are bed bugs actually. Cause no one else in the apartment
has them or any bites or anything. The bug spray is helping though. I hope
it's not something like a spider...
Anyways! This week has been a very tough one and my patience has been
tested like crazy... Today while we were doing Pday stuff (if you can call
it that. All my comp wants to do is play soccer and solve his rubix cube) I
left our window open and loe and behold, HUGE rain storm. So now my
journal, sheets, pillow, notebook, copy of Our Search for Happiness, and
other assorted things are totally soaked. Not ruined but soaked. Oh well
haha. My bad ;)
The baptsim on thursday didn't happen for reasons I won't name so that was
lame. But we are working on getting a new date set for her! Yesterday we
challenged a family we've been teaching to be batized and they all said
yes!!! 5 baptisms for November 15! Crazy huh?
We also had 7 investigators at church and I gave a scary talk in sacrament in Spanish! Wowza!
I can understand more spanish now but still not perfect. Speaking is still
coming slowly but it's coming! This country is absolutely beautiful though.
The mountains are amazing and the weather (here) is perfect. We've been
having a lot of lessons lately and they all seem to go well!
The mornings are super rough here though. Every morning I wake and I'm
really homesick and stuff and have a hard time with that. But once we start
teaching I feel great and all is well!
I love you guys! I hope all is well in Edmond!
Love,
Elder Skinner
I sounded really annoyingly sad in that last email haha... Sorry about
that.. I'm doing great!! I love it here and I miss you guys a lot!
Don't stop being the best family ever.

First Week in the Mission Field- Popayan, Colombia

Here's the latest from Elder Justin! And Pictures!

Hey ya'll! Happy anniversary mom and dad!! It's been 21 years already?
Shmowzow...
I'm in Popayan and it's beautiful weather all the time! I've had to use my
big jacket a couple of times for water proof purposes but it's like spring
all the time here.

I haven't had any weird food yet but some of these juices and fruits get pretty interesting. The mission field is incredibly fun but very very hard. The people talk super duper fast and it's hard to understand them. My companion is really nice and cool. Elder Garcia is his name and he's from Lima, Peru! My Spanish is much better now but far from
perfect (or even good for that matter).
It's been a very patience building past few days... Elder G speaks a little
English so that's good and helpful. We've been teaching like crazy! We got
four new investigators yesterday and we have a baptism on Thursday! I was
asked to be the one to baptize and I am crazy stoked!!!
The mission president is very nice! I was told to delete all of my movie
soundtracks though so that's lame. He speaks very little English so that
interview with him was pretty stressful. haha.
There most definitely bed bugs and I have a bout a million bites all over
the place. They aren't too bad though. What??? Not too bad? That sounds pretty bad!
I'm going to start sleeping with bug spray on to see if that changes anything. If it doesn't then I have chiggers or something like that. But all is well!! Good boy, but I still think he should contact the mission president about possible bed bugs. Won't he just spread them through the whole mission? Comment below if you know anything about missionaries having bed bugs...
General conference was so good!!! I loved it so much!!! I really liked the
fact that they're speaking in different languages now. That's pretty cool!
I liked the talk that talked about patriarchal blessings and how we need
to live in a way that will make the promised blessings in them come to
pass. It may seem like, "well, of course your living the right way. you're
on a mission." But your mind set counts too. It's been hard to keep myself focused on the
mission and not on you guys or how much I miss home or music or my guitars.
SO I've tried to change my thought process and it's coming slowly, like my
Spanish, but I'm getting there!
I love you guys! Keep it fresh!
love,
Elder Skinner

His mission companion from his last 2 weeks in the MTC who didn't speak English
In honor of Principal Skinner and Elder Skinner, an Elder at the MTC drew these characters for him.

I don't know where these were taken. I was assuming Bogota...

MTC days are numbered! (4 more)

I can't believe it, but he's leaving the MTC in Bogota for his mission in Cali on TUESDAY!!
That means he was only in the MTC for 6 weeks. When he said that at the beginning, I though he made a mistake. I have always thought it was 2 months in the MTC for foreign languages, but I guess in the country it's only 6 weeks.

Do you see him? (Bottom Left corner! Look at that missionary cut. Is his hair parted??)

We got a great letter this week. Must have been a birthday present for me. Here it is: (my comments in green again.)

Mummy and family,
HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY!!! How old are you now? Like 32? Yes, that's exactly how old I am... cough cough.
Sorry my letters are so short haha. They give us an hour and that is not
enough time... That's a half hour longer than I supposed. ;) But things are going swell. I had my first touch of home sickness last Friday and it's still lingering but no big deal. I'm having fun!
Things at the MTC just picked up. I got a Latino companion from Venezuela
named Elder Paz. Doesn't speak English so it has been VERY frustrating but
I'm hanging in there. :) My Spanish has easily doubled, maybe even tripled
since last Wednesday when he showed up. We went street contacting again
yesterday and thanks to his craziness we talked to 20 people, got 14 of their
numbers, and committed two of them to be baptized!! He was seriously nuts.
He was practically chasing people down (which is really not something we
should do but he knew more Spanish and so I had very little control
over that.)
I just wanted to read my Patriarchal blessing in the celestial room at the temple so
I'm so happy you sent it so fast! It's so amazing to read in such a
spiritual place.
I just got six dearelder.com letters on Wednesday so yes I got them :) Hmmmm. 6 letters from home, same day homesickness started...Coincidence? Probably not. oops. I loved
that haha. Tell all my fool sibs to write me! Specifically Ian. Haven't
heard from that booger yet! Ian has written twice (short emails) but has put the wrong email address both times. (shakes head)
I've made some amazing friends here and it's been super awesome. The scary
part is that this has been the LONGEST WEEKS OF MY LIFE....... It feels
like I'm coming home on Tuesday. Oh yeah, I leave the MTC on Tuesday. I
might call from the airport in Cali or Bogota depending on whether or not I
decide that it's ok to do that. It'll be at like 3:00 AM if I do though. so
probably not.
Spanish is coming! I've been doing pretty well and proselyting yesterday
was incredible. It's been hard not to feel sorry for myself when I can't
talk my companion (unless I want to bear my testimony or ask to go to the
bathroom haha)
So I'm retarded and can't figure out how to use the life straw... I don't think it's that hard. Put in water, suck water up. I will find instructions and send.
I'll send a real letter once I'm out of the MTC with some stickers for the
kiddies. There are these stickers here that come in little chocolates and
they are worth more than money man. People lliterallybuy ties with these
stickers. I have around 25 and man do I have some good ones!
I love you guys!!!
Love Elder Jenky Baby.

So...looks like he's off to his mission SOON!!! Yikes.
Start sending mail to Mission home now.

Justin's Farewell Talk

Because it's such a long time between P-days this time, I'm going to post Justin's Farewell talk that he gave in Oklahoma the week before he left.

This is sort of just to have it documented, but y'all can read it if'n ya want. (I'm talkin' OK now.)

Because I am about to leave on my mission and be representative of Jesus Christ, I thought I would focus my talk on how I can become like Christ. In Preach my Gospel, there is an entire chapter called Christlike Attributes that is dedicated to help missionaries become like our Savior.
After ripping out what hair I had left trying to decide which attributes I wanted to talk about, I finally decided on a few.
Charity and Love, Patience, and Humility.
First, Charity and love. Well, what is Charity? In Moroni 7:47, it says…
47 But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.
A few months before I graduated, I was reading the same Charity and love section in Preach my Gospel when I decided I was going work on being more Charitable and Loving because when I really thought about it, I was only charitable when I had to be and I most certainly had are hard time loving everyone. I thought that all I had to do was just not hate anyone and that would cover it.
After I finished reading this section, I prayed to my Heavenly Father and asked for more opportunities to love and be charitable. The next day, I was walking home from my school during a free period I had and noticed that one of my neighbors, who was also a member of my ward, was in his garage working.
I stopped for a second and looked across the street at him and then had a very distinct feeling that I should go over and help him. Instantly I started rationalizing and coming up with all the reasons that I should not go over there.
“Aw, come on Heavenly Father, I don’t even know him very well!”
“It’s weird to just approach people like that and ask them if they need help”
“I want to go home and watch TV”
Finally, after coming up with about a million reasons to not go over there, I decided to walk over there because I had asked Heavenly Father for an opportunity like this. Not to mention that it was probably really weird to see a teenage boy looking intently at a man working his garage from across the street.
So I went over and asked if he needed any help in his garage. I then found out that he was about to install a large steel cabinet on the wall by himself. He is an older man, around 60 with Multiple Sclerosis so installing a heavy steel cabinet on his own seemed crazy to me.
As we were installing the cabinet, I was able to find out a lot about him. He told me about how he had left the church and wanted nothing to do with it for a long time. He told me that he had an extremely spiritual experience in which he was reactivated into the church. The spirit was very strong as we continued to talk. What would I have done if I didn’t go help him? Probably watched tv. I would’ve have done nothing productive at all.
But because I asked for an opportunity to love and serve another person, I was able to get to know a good man and become more like my Savior.
The next attribute is Patience.
Unfortunately, I do not have a really cool story about patience, because, more often than not, I struggle with being patient.
So what is patience?
In Preach my Gospel it says, “Patience is the capacity to endure delay, trouble, opposition, or suffering without becoming angry, frustrated, or anxious.”
Our beloved Prophet Thomas S Monson said, “Life is full of difficulties, some minor and others of a more serious nature. There seems to be an unending supply of challenges for one and all. Our problem is that we often expect instantaneous solutions to such challenges, forgetting that frequently the heavenly virtue of patience is required.”
I know that it really is hard to be patient sometimes. I mean, I’m the oldest of five kids, so I know what it’s like to need to be patient.
But our Savior is very patient with me. I know that I probably let Him down all the time but he’s never given up on me and he never will.
The last virtue I’m going to talk about is Humility.
This could also be called being Humble. What does it mean to be humble?
In Mosiah 4:11-12 it says…
11 And again I say unto you as I have said before, that as ye have come to the knowledge of the glory of God, or if ye have known of his goodness and have tasted of his love, and have received aremission of your sins, which causeth such exceedingly great joy in your souls, even so I would that ye should remember, and always retain in remembrance, the greatness of God, and your ownnothingness, and his goodness and long-suffering towards you, unworthy creatures, and humble yourselves even in the depths ofhumility, calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standingsteadfastly in the faith of that which is to come, which was spoken by the mouth of the angel.
12 And behold, I say unto you that if ye do this ye shall always rejoice, and be filled with the love of God, and always retain a remission of your sins; and ye shall grow in the knowledge of the glory of him that created you, or in the knowledge of that which is just and true.

Ammon, one of my favorite Book of Mormon prophets, gives a good example of being humble in Alma 26:12, which says…
12 Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever.
When I hear that Ammon said that, he went ten notches up on the coolness scale. We know all of the amazing things that he did! He led to the conversion of an entire nation and he still does not think of himself as a mighty man. He gives the glory to his Heavenly Father and his savior Jesus Christ.
Brothers and sisters, I know I’m not like Christ. But I know that I can try to be like Him by following His example.

(close).

He closed with his testimony and talked about how he'd be wearing Christ's name on his heart via his missionary name tag and hoped to do so with worthiness and as a true witness and example.
It was a great talk!

Dad Gets Better Letters than Mom

So, this is Daniel's letter. This one's a little more personal. The list of questions I sent him to answer sort of backfired on me. All I got was the list of answers. But I did get pictures! haha (I added a few comments, in the more calm color of green this time...)

I have a blog? Far out haha.. (Daniel informed him that I'd been dissing him on his blog.) It's hard to know what to write about cause so much happens! (What?! What is happening? How bout writing about that for starters?) I've been picking up Spanish very slowly but surely.
Colombia is pretty fun! We had a super intense hail/rain storm the other day. It was pretty cool.
Every once and a while we watch MTC devotionals on Sundays. Elder Bednar gave an excellent talk on turning outward on the natural man inside of us.
It's been hard not to feel sad or bummed or just plain sorry for myself but that talk changed my perspective. I need to quit being a baby and just lose myself in the service of others and then this whole mission thing will go smoother.
We went to the temple this morning and man, that was a lot of fun. The Spirit was so strong and my soul is singing happy songs all day, man.
The Bogota temple is very pretty so post a picture of it on MY BLOG.

Love you guys!!!
I've been drinking lots of apple soda in your memory.
Love,
Elder Skinner

Bogota Temple (as ordered)
Agreed.
It IS beautiful.

Pictures Finally

I wrote him a list of questions this time so he'd have a few idea of what to write about. Here are his answers:

Do they have church or any talks in English? Or are you having to translate every single thing there?
pretty much everything is in Spanish. We watch some Provo MTC devotionals
in English though.
What kinds of things do you and your companion have in common? And what differences? What's his family like? My comp and I have nothing in common but we get along great. His family is
very traditional and cool sounding. 4 older sisters.
I get a Latino companion for my last two weeks who doesn't speak English.
Rad right?
Do you miss music? Have you had any opportunities to sing in choirs at the MTC? I miss music EMENSLEY. And no. There aren't really any choirs here.
What's your favorite meal so far? (besides the passion fruit)
>Favorite meal is pizza. Cause it's not steak. We have steak alomst every
single day....
What is your typical day at the MTC like?

Mtc life is fun! We learn Spanish almost all day and teach fake
investigators. We went on a tour of Bogota today so that's where these
pictures are taken. On top of the Andes mountains!!!
Love you guys!!! I love Owen's Disney! It's way awesome! love, Elder Skinner
Bogota
Cool Moss Cross!

Steep Railway track?

Letter Home on Second P-day in the MTC (with commentary by Mom)

Mom's comments in RED throughout Justin's letter.

I'm healthy now! I feel totally fine as long as we aren't eating. Cause in all honesty, this food is pretty gross. BABY! It actually tastes fine but for some reason it's a battle not to gag when I swallow. They have this rad fruit called the Garandilla (passion fruit) and the inside looks like a ton of alien embryos! It's pretty yummy. Daniel has been telling us about passion fruit from his mission in Ecuador for years. Apparently Justin never listened. :)

I've been struggling with Spanish and I'm one of two guys in my district who has never taken Spanish so I'm pretty behind. But I'm loving it! My companion is super awesome (Elder Walton).

We've been trying to teach this fake investigator lessons in Spanish and, man, that is super rough. He shut us down during the last lesson.

We went to the temple today and the endowment session was incredible. the celestial room here is gorgeous, and way bigger than OKC's.

I'm now famous around the MTC for being the only kid who didn't know the water from the sink would make me sick. haha. We talked about this several times. The Doctor who gave him his immunizations talked about this with him. He gave him a bunch of papers to read all about every disease you can possibly get down in South America, focusing on Colombia. He even gave him a prescription for an antibiotic for "traveler's diarrhea." Tell me...How did he not know that the water would make him sick? Your guess is as good as mine. haha  They gave me a water bottle that has a filter in it so I can use that when there aren't any puddles around. Here he's referencing my letter where I told him to use the life straw he took with him. I said he could use it to drink from a puddle and it would be ok.

So when I figure out what the computer is telling me to do when uploading pics I will send some haha. I love you guys! Sorry I suck at writing letters. But hey, I'm famous. Gotta write all my fans in Utah. ;) All you fans in Utah, share any information you get that we didn't in the comments. We'd love to hear more about what he's been up to!
Love, Elder Justin

hmmm....My comments are almost longer than the letter itself. I don't think I'll do that next time. It's fun hearing from him. He sounds happy. Love that kid  elder.
